Built-In Ventilation

Your kit’s container isn’t just a plastic box — it’s a carefully designed mini-greenhouse with ventilation built in. Small ¼” holes along the top edges allow excess humidity to escape, while optional lower vents help bring in fresh air. This gentle airflow prevents the stale, overly damp conditions that encourage algae or mold, while still keeping enough moisture inside for healthy seed germination.

And because every growing season is different, you can even tape over vents or open more as needed — making your kit adjustable for both cool fall sowing and warmer spring use.

Specially Formulated Potting Mix

The soil in your kit isn’t store-bought filler — it’s a balanced blend crafted for fall sowing. The mix is light enough to let delicate roots breathe, yet moisture-retentive so seedlings won’t dry out in their earliest stages.

Unlike bagged garden soil or compost, it’s lean and clean — designed to discourage algae and fungus growth while giving seeds the perfect environment to rest and germinate through winter.

When spring comes, you can continue using this same container with a slightly richer mix (just add worm castings or our refill blend) to give new flowers, herbs, or veggies the nutrients they’ll need for faster growth.

The base tray keeps your seedling cups elevated above standing water, so roots never sit soggy. Instead, moisture wicks upward when the soil needs it — giving your seedlings consistent hydration without the risk of rot. This simple feature mimics nature’s balance: moist, but never waterlogged.

Fall Seed Sowing Kit – Step-by-Step

1. Fill the Cups

  • Add soil to each cup and gently firm it so the surface is level — don’t press too hard.
  • There’s enough soil for all cups. If you run short, you may have packed the first few cups too tightly.

2. Moisten the Soil

  • Water until soil is evenly moist but not soggy.
  • If water pools on top, wait for it to soak in before sowing.

3. Sow the Seeds

  • Add 3–4 seeds to the soil surface of each cup. Space them, give each a little room from the others!
  • If your seed packet lists a planting depth, follow that.
  • If no depth is listed, cover seeds with a thin sprinkle of soil — about twice the seed’s thickness.
  • For very tiny seeds, simply press them into the soil surface without covering with soil. These tiny seeds are light-dependent germinators.

4. Prepare the Container

Place the spacer rack or tray at the bottom of the kit’s container. This rack elevates the bottoms of the cups so they’re not sitting in accumulated moisture all the time.

Set your seeded cups on the rack.

5. Settle the Seeds

Give the cups another gentle watering so seeds make good contact with the soil.

Special tip regarding tiny seeds: Gently mist after sowing so seeds aren’t displaced, and close the lid promptly to maintain humidity.

6. Choose the Right Spot

Choose this location carefully from the start — the right placement now means your seedlings can stay put all season, avoiding the stress of being moved later and giving them the best possible start.

Place the container where it gets a few hours of sunlight per day — morning sun and afternoon shade is ideal.

Avoid full-day full sun or constant shade.

Keep it sheltered from strong wind and heavy rain. Place against the exterior wall of your home. Place a heavy object on top of the container in case of strong wind.

7. Weekly Care Check

  • Once a week, check that the soil hasn’t dried out.
  • Your container acts like a humidity dome — daytime warmth should create condensation inside.
  • If you see no condensation for several days, it’s time to check moisture and water lightly if needed.

8. Hands-Off Germination

  • Don’t dig in the cups to check for sprouts — this can damage seeds and seedlings.
  • Trust that new life is developing under the surface 😊.

9. Extreme Cold Protection

If temperatures drop below 22°F (-5°C), move the whole container to an unheated indoor space (like a garage or shed) until the cold snap passes.

Avoid moving into a heated room — warmth can trigger early sprouting before spring.

Extra Cold Snap Tip


For a brief overnight freeze, you can wrap the container in an old towel, blanket, or burlap to help hold in warmth. Remove the wrap as soon as temperatures rise above freezing the next day — leaving it on longer can trap too much heat and reduce air circulation, which can harm your seedlings. For extended cold spells, it’s safer to move the container to an unheated garage or sheltered area until conditions improve.

What’s That Green Stuff?

Why algae might develop Inside your container

  • Consistent light hitting moist soil through the clear container sides.
  • High humidity + stagnant air (which you’ll have in your “humidity dome” environment).
  • Nutrient-rich surface — algae thrives in soil mixes rich in compost or organic fertilizers, but your fall mix is light on nutrients, which makes it much less inviting.

Why it’s usually minimal in fall sowing

  • Cooler temperatures slow algae growth dramatically.
  • Shorter daylight hours and softer winter light reduce the “green film” risk.
  • Your fall mix doesn’t have a lot of rich organic matter (like worm castings), which limits food for algae.

If algae does show up

  • A light film on soil or the inside of the container walls is more cosmetic than harmful.
  • If it gets heavy, it can hold moisture on the soil surface and slightly reduce airflow to the seeds.
  • Easy fix: wipe the inside lid/walls with a damp cloth when you do your periodic checks; sprinkle a tiny bit of dry sand or fine grit on the soil surface to discourage it.

Transitioning to Spring Growing

As the weather warms, you may notice your seeds sprouting and reaching toward the light. One of the biggest benefits of fall sowing perennials is that your seedlings will be extra tough — naturally acclimated to cooler temperatures and light changes — making the spring hardening-off process much easier.

Choose your container’s location with care from the very beginning — ideally part sun, part shade, sheltered from harsh wind. Get this right now, and you won’t have to move it later, saving your seedlings from stress and setting them up for success from the get-go.

Keep the lid on until seedlings have grown taller than the container, then remove the lid. Continue to monitor moisture and growth as they enjoy the increasing spring sunlight.

I’m seeing little gnats! Help!

Fungus gnats are mostly a nuisance for healthy, established seedlings, but they can be a real problem for very young or delicate seedlings — especially in a spring setup where you’re indoors or in a warm greenhouse.

Why they’re a nuisance in most cases

  • Adults don’t harm plants — they’re just tiny, annoying flies that hover around the soil surface.
  • They breed in consistently moist soil, especially in organic-rich mixes.
  • Their presence can be off-putting to gardeners who aren’t used to them.

When they can cause damage

  • The larvae feed on decaying plant matter and sometimes root hairs.
  • In heavy infestations, they can stunt growth or even kill tender seedlings with small root systems (common in overwatered trays).
  • More likely to be a concern in warm, humid environments, when using the kit as a seed starter in the spring — less so in your cool-season fall sowing kits.

Prevention For Your kit

  • Add a very thin layer of coarse sand on the soil surface.
  • Diatomaceous earth (DE) sprinkled on top — kills larvae and discourages egg-laying.
  • Letting the soil surface dry slightly between waterings.
